888 was incorporated in 1997 in the British Virgin Islands (under the name “Virtual Holdings Limited”) and began operations the same year in accordance with an Antiguan gaming license. 888’s first proprietary product, Casino-on-Net, was launched in May 1997 and was amongst the first online casinos. In 2002 888 launched its “888” brand and also its multi-player online poker room, Pacific Poker.
In late 2002, 888 made a strategic decision to relocate to a recognized financial centre within the European Union with an established regulatory framework for gaming activities. Accordingly, in July 2003, 888 obtained a gaming license in Gibraltar. 888’s headquarters, management and operational centre, including all of its gaming and deposit servers, as well as part of its client support center, were moved from Antigua to Gibraltar.
In 2005, 888 was listed on the London Stock Exchange. The initial public offering was underwritten by reputable banks, and included legal opinions from leading law firms. By all accounts, the listing was a success and 888 remains a publicly traded company today on the London stock exchange.
Presently, 888 offers its services both directly to consumers through an array of proprietary B2C offerings, and through or with other operators in assorted forms of B2B partnerships (white labels, software integration solutions, full-service hosted solutions, etc.).
As a market leader, 888 is highly committed to the regulation of online gaming. In addition to its Gibraltar license, 888 has obtained online gaming licenses from other EU jurisdictions including France and Italy, and intends to obtain appropriate licenses for its services in other jurisdictions that make such licenses available.
