ESSA (European Sports Security Association) is widely recognised to have contributed to the licensed betting sector’s continuing success in deterring betting related match-fixing within its markets. A major element of ESSA’s success has been its ability to quickly gather detailed intelligence on suspicious betting activity and to pass the appropriate information on to the relevant regulators and sporting authorities to take any action deemed necessary.
The organisation’s core mandate is to facilitate cross-sector partnerships and to protect operators, their customers and sporting bodies from betting related corruption. ESSA has therefore established information sharing agreements with a large number of leading sports governing bodies, including FIFA and the IOC. We also have similar arrangements in place with a range of gambling regulators such as the British Gambling Commission and its counterparts in Alderney, Malta and Gibraltar.
Our information network provides transnational coverage and has proved to be highly effective in detecting and deterring betting corruption. That has facilitated the organisation’s access to high-level transnational discussions with senior representatives of governments, regulatory authorities and sporting bodies.
ESSA’s membership includes the majority of the major European licensed on and offline private betting operators but it is open to any licensed operator and we also represent a number of non-European based companies.
